Acid-washed kaolin suspended in untreated columns (controls) containing 50 g l −1 were determined to settle at a rate of 0.38 cm min −1 ( Figure 1 ). Higher settling rates were observed with increasing mucilage concentrations (10–100 mg l −1 ), although trends and exact rates were observed to differ between NE and GE mucilage types.
